Riding class felt like I was taking a step back into my pre–familial-financial-crisis life, when all I had to do was take care of my horses and I could ride whenever I wanted. But life had taken a turn or two or three. Truthfully, even before my parents—well, my adoptive parents—had sold my horses, my relationship with them had begun deteriorating. Looking back, it was as if they knew I was different, and while they adored their baby girl, the teenage version didn’t quite live up to their expectations. Their lack of interest, or maybe should I say disappointment in me, drove me to get the best grades in all my classes. To be the best in every activity I participated in. But still it wasn’t enough. Honestly, even my classmates began to distance themselves from me as we entered the last years of high school. If Derrick hadn’t guilted me into sleeping with him, even he would have left. I’d spent the last two years of school scrutinizing every pore, every eyelash, every aspect of my face, body, and hair to see if perhaps I’d missed something, wondering whether, if I could alter or change it, all would be forgiven and my friends would come running back. It never happened.

Not when I dyed my hair blond to hide the dark auburn that grew more lush and vibrant with each passing year.

Not when I stopped participating in class, hoping that maybe if I didn’t act like such an overachiever, they’d like me again.

Not even when I broke my ankle and my school bag wobbled awkwardly from my arms as I hobbled from class to class. Derrick never even helped with my bag unless I gave him a hand job in the girls’ bathroom each morning.

Maybe they sensed the predator emerging in me. That had to be it, but it didn’t make it hurt any less.

Now, everyone seemed to like me, aside from Azalea. Anastasia loved me. She loved Dez too, which admittedly I was still jealous about, but given my past history, who could blame me?

Even Canyon, who I was supposed to stay away from, always appeared whenever I wasn’t sure where my next class was. He would offer to carry half of the giant stack of books I checked out of the library without even the promise of sex. It made me want him more.

This afternoon, my Meditation and Yoga instructor, Dez’s Jace, encouraged us to embrace our insecurities, and I was really trying to. I smiled to myself. I’d never admit it to my sister, but so far as a Sempiternal, so good—as long as I kept my cool around my sister.

Our bedroom door swung open, and Speak-of-the-Temptress waltzed in. Her behavior immediately put me on edge.

“What are you so happy about?”

She winked at me. “A lady never divulges her secrets.” She hopped up on the bed next to me. “Luckily I’m not one of those. I spent time late this afternoon with Hunky and left him wanting me more.
